Florida & Cape Coral Rain Sensor Requirements

Florida Statute 373.62 requires automatic landscape irrigation systems to properly install, maintain, and operate technology, such as a rain sensor device or switch, that interrupts watering during periods of sufficient moisture. The rain shutoff device must override the watering cycle after adequate rainfall.

The statute also sets obligations for licensed contractors working on automatic irrigation systems. A contractor must test the rain sensor and install or repair it when the device is missing or faulty before completing other irrigation work.

Cape Coral Ordinance 46-23 includes a similar requirement. Licensed contractors must test rain sensors and other devices that inhibit or interrupt irrigation, then install or repair a missing or nonworking device before finishing other work on the system.

How a Rain Sensor Works

A rain sensor monitors rainfall and signals the irrigation controller when conditions meet its shutoff setting. The controller pauses the watering program until the sensor dries and permits scheduled operation again. This function works independently of the programmed watering schedule.
